Wahneta Tree Service South of Winter Haven
Wahneta is a census-designated place in central Polk County, south of Winter Haven and just below the Wahneta Canal that marks the bottom edge of Eloise. Rifle Range Road, signed as County Road 655, runs north and south through the middle of it. Off that road you find the old Wahneta grid, with streets named 1st Wahneta Street East and West through the teens, crossed by Avenue A, B and C Wahneta. Wahneta Elementary serves the community, and Eloise Loop Road curves along the north side toward the south cove of Lake Eloise. About 4,409 people lived here at the 2020 census.
This is farm and grove country that was drained to be worked. A set of 1929 state laws created the Wahneta Drainage District, which ran the canal system until the Legislature repealed those laws in 1997 and handed what remained to Polk County. A drainage canal still cuts across the area, and many back lots border a ditch or low swale. The newer subdivisions east and west of Rifle Range Road were laid out on former grove land, and some of the street names say so: Fall Glo Road, Honey Bell Road, Star Ruby Lane and Rio Red Court are all citrus varieties.
Wahneta Tree Removal on Flat, Canal-Drained Ground
The ground in Wahneta is flat and sandy, and the water table sits close to the surface in wet months. Trees along canal banks and swales grow shallow, wide roots instead of deep ones. Water oaks and laurel oaks do well here for a few decades and then decline from the inside, often with fungus at the base before anything shows in the canopy. When they fail, they tend to fail at the roots, so a tree that looks full and green can still be a real risk to a house or a car parked under it.
Besides oaks, a typical Wahneta yard has sabal palms, a queen palm or two, slash pine on the bigger lots, camphor, crape myrtles and some old citrus. Chinese tallow is common along ditches, where seed carried by birds and water sprouts thick stands. On the newer subdivision lots, the issue is usually the opposite: young oaks planted too close to the house or driveway that need early pruning to grow into safe trees. We look at both kinds of problems during the free walk-through.

Wahneta Roads and Neighborhoods We Cover
- Rifle Range Road (CR 655) — the busy north-south route; roadside oaks and pines here often lean toward the pavement or a mailbox.
- The Wahneta street grid (1st through 19th Wahneta Street, Avenue A, B and C Wahneta) — older homes with mature water oaks and overgrown palms.
- Eloise Loop Road — the northern edge toward Lake Eloise, with wetter ground and bigger shade trees.
- Lake Eloise Pointe — a newer neighborhood off Eloise Loop Road where young oaks and palms need structural trimming.
- Majestic Gardens — subdivision streets with small planted trees and palm cleanup work.
- Fall Glo Road, Honey Bell Road and Star Ruby Lane — former grove land where leftover citrus and tallow still pop up on lot edges.
- Gerber Dairy Road — larger rural parcels with pine stands, brush and fence-line clearing.
Common Tree Jobs for Wahneta Homeowners
In Wahneta we do a lot of palm work, because sabal palms are everywhere and their dead fronds and seed stalks pile up fast. We also take down water oaks that have gone hollow, clear ditch banks choked with tallow and vines, and remove pines that died after a dry spring or a beetle attack. Larger parcels out toward Gerber Dairy Road sometimes need light lot clearing for a new driveway, a barn pad or a fence line. After big storms like Ian in 2022 and Milton in 2024, the calls here were mostly uprooted oaks across driveways and pines snapped mid-trunk.
Wahneta Tree Rules and Polk County Requirements
Wahneta is not inside any city, so Polk County's Land Development Code is the rulebook here. Homeowners on an existing single-family lot generally can remove a yard tree without a county tree permit. That changes on land being developed, on commercial property and in or near wetlands, canals or lake shorelines, where county, water management district or state rules can apply. Since so much of Wahneta borders a drainage ditch or canal, we confirm the parcel details with Polk County on every estimate. Under Florida Statute 163.045, a single-family homeowner with signed documentation from an ISA Certified Arborist or a Florida licensed landscape architect showing a tree is an unacceptable risk cannot be required to get a local permit, pay a fee or replant. We can arrange that written assessment when it helps.
Electric Lines Along Wahneta Streets
Overhead lines run along Rifle Range Road and most of the grid streets. Tampa Electric serves much of the Winter Haven area and Duke Energy Florida has lines in parts of Polk, so we check the provider for your address before we start. Anything touching a primary line is the utility's job first. We will call it in for you if needed and come back to finish once the line is safe.

Tree Service Prices in Wahneta, FL
Wahneta lots are often more open than those in town, so a lot of removals here are less rigging-heavy and cost less as a result. A small tree or dead pine under 30 feet with clear drop space often falls between $325 and $850. A mature water oak near the house usually lands in the $850 to $1,800 bracket. Palm trimming runs about $85 to $285 per palm depending on height and how many fronds and seed pods need to come off, and it adds up to a good value when we do a whole row in one trip. Ditch-bank or lot clearing on acreage is priced by the job, with light clearing starting around $1,800 per acre.
Palm Trimming, Removal and Clearing Services in Wahneta
Our palm tree trimming keeps sabal and queen palms tidy without over-cutting the green fronds the tree needs. For hollow oaks and dead pines, we handle the full tree removal with haul-off included. On larger rural parcels, our land clearing crew can open up brush and tallow along fence lines and canals. If you are not sure a tree is safe, a tree risk assessment walk-through costs nothing with any estimate. Our article on how Ian and Milton hit Polk County trees explains which species failed most.

Questions
Wahneta Tree Service FAQ
No. Wahneta is an unincorporated census-designated place, even though many addresses carry a Winter Haven mailing address and the 33880 ZIP code. That means Polk County rules govern tree work, not the city's tree code. We confirm the jurisdiction on every estimate because the mailing address alone does not tell you which rules apply.
Wahneta is flat with a high water table, especially near canals and ditches. Trees growing there spread shallow roots instead of deep ones, and water oaks often develop root and butt rot as they age. A tree can look healthy on top while the base is weak. We check for mushrooms at the base, soil heaving and lean during the free walk-through.
Most sabal palms do fine with a trim once a year, usually in late spring or summer after they flower. Removing only the dead and drooping fronds and the seed stalks keeps them neat without weakening them. Cutting off healthy green fronds to make a tight round head looks clean for a few weeks but stresses the palm. We trim to what the tree can spare.
Sure. Chinese tallow and vines spread fast along ditches and swales in Wahneta. We can cut and chip them and grind stumps where equipment can safely reach. Work in or right next to a canal or wetland can fall under county, water management district or state rules, so we confirm what is allowed for that parcel before we start cutting at the water's edge.
A dead pine under about 30 feet with open space to drop it often costs $325 to $850. Taller pines or ones leaning toward a house or line run higher because we have to take them down in sections. Dead pines get brittle quickly, so we do not wait on them, and we will tell you honestly if the tree is stable enough to wait a few weeks.
We do light clearing for driveways, house pads, fence lines and pasture edges on the larger rural lots south and east of the grid. Light clearing generally starts around $1,800 per acre and goes up with dense brush, big stumps or trees that need hauling. We walk the property first and give a written price, and we flag any wetland edges that may need county review.
If a limb or tree is on a primary line, the utility has to make it safe first, and we can call it in with you. Much of the area is Tampa Electric, with Duke Energy Florida serving some parts of Polk. Once the line is cleared or turned off, we remove the rest of the tree and clean up.
Usually not for a simple removal on a single-family lot in Wahneta. But if a tree sits in an area where the county would normally require approval, a signed risk assessment from an ISA Certified Arborist can let you remove it under Florida Statute 163.045 without a permit or fee. We can arrange that report at cost when it is needed.
