Inwood Tree Service and Tree Removal in Winter Haven
Inwood is Winter Haven's older west-side neighborhood, laid out in the 1920s around Lake Cannon, Lake Blue and Lake Deer. Its big oaks and tight lettered-avenue lots call for careful rigging, and we price every job in writing first.
Inwood Tree Service on Winter Haven's West Side
Inwood is a census-designated place on the west side of Winter Haven, covering about two square miles between Lake Cannon and Recker Highway. It was marketed by the Haven Villa Corporation during the 1920s land boom and never folded into the city limits, which is why the Census counted it as West Winter Haven from 1950 through 1970. Today about 7,000 people live here on a grid of lettered avenues and numbered streets marked Northwest, from Avenue A NW up past Avenue T NW and 26th Street NW out to 41st Street NW. Havendale Boulevard (SR 544) and Avenue G NW (CR 542) carry most of the traffic.
Four lakes touch Inwood. Lake Blue is the only one entirely inside it, while Lake Cannon, Lake Jessie and Lake Deer sit on its edges. Lake Cannon and Lake Jessie belong to the Southern Chain of Lakes, so boat traffic and seawalls are part of the picture on those shorelines. Lake Cannon Park, Lake Blue Park and Westwood Park are the green spaces most neighbors know, and Inwood Elementary, Garner Elementary and Westwood Middle are all here.
Tree Removal in Inwood: Old Oaks on Tight Lots
Much of Inwood was built out in the 1940s through the 1960s, and the shade trees planted then are now at or past full size. Laurel oaks from that era are the biggest worry, since they tend to rot from the inside after 50 or 60 years. Live oaks hold up better but spread wide enough to hang over two or three neighboring yards. On the lettered avenues, lots are narrow, many have alleys or tight side yards, and overhead lines run along the streets. Nearly every big removal here means climbing and lowering pieces on ropes rather than dropping the whole tree.
The ground is the sandy ridge-edge soil common to west Winter Haven, drier on the higher blocks and wetter near the lakes. Near Lake Cannon and Lake Jessie you see bald cypress, red maples and sabal palms along the seawalls, and Chinese tallow creeps into any shoreline that is not kept up. Camphor trees are another regular in Inwood yards. They grow fast, shade out lawns and spread seed, so many owners choose to remove them instead of trimming every few years.

Inwood Streets and Lakes We Cover
- Havendale Boulevard (SR 544) — the commercial corridor; we clear trees and buffers around shopping plazas and roadside lots.
- Avenue G NW (CR 542) — an older route lined with mature oaks that often overhang sidewalks and lines.
- Lake Cannon Drive West — lakefront lots with seawalls, cypress and big live oaks that need careful pruning.
- Lake Blue Drive — homes around Inwood's own lake, where shoreline trees and palms need regular cleanup.
- Idylwild Drive NW — established streets with large laurel oaks reaching the end of their lifespan.
- Avenue Q NW through Avenue T NW — the dense grid, where small yards make rigging the default for any big tree.
- East and West Lake Deer Drive — lakeside lots with mixed oaks, palms and some leftover citrus.
Typical Inwood Tree Service Calls
Most Inwood calls are about one specific tree: an oak limb over a roof, a camphor that has taken over a backyard, or a hollow laurel oak someone is nervous about. We also prune lakefront live oaks to open a view of Lake Cannon or Lake Blue without topping the tree. Seawall and dock owners ask us to remove trees whose roots are pushing on the wall. And after storms, the lettered-avenue grid gets a lot of limbs on fences, cars and service drops, which is where our emergency line earns its keep.
Inwood Tree Rules: County or City?
Inwood is unincorporated, so most addresses here follow Polk County's Land Development Code rather than Winter Haven's city code. Some parcels nearby are inside city limits even though the whole area shares Winter Haven mailing addresses, so we check every property before work. On an existing single-family lot in the county, removing a yard tree usually needs no county tree permit. Shoreline work on Lake Cannon, Lake Jessie or Lake Blue is different, because shoreline vegetation and anything in the water can fall under state and water management district rules. Under Florida Statute 163.045, a homeowner with signed documentation from an ISA Certified Arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect showing unacceptable risk can remove the tree without a local permit or fee. Our post on trees and shorelines on the Chain of Lakes covers the lakefront side.
Power Lines and Utilities in Inwood
Inwood's older streets carry a lot of overhead wire, and many big oaks were planted right under it. Tampa Electric covers much of the Winter Haven area, and some parts of Polk are Duke Energy Florida, so we confirm the provider for your street. Primary lines are the utility's to clear. We handle the rest of the tree once the line is safe and work around service drops with ropes.

How Much Tree Work Costs in Inwood
Because so many Inwood removals need climbing and rigging, expect most mature oaks to price between $850 and $1,800, and the largest laurel and live oaks over houses to run $1,800 to $3,600 or more. A lakefront job with limited access, where we carry everything around a house or work from a seawall, typically adds 10 to 30 percent. Pruning a single large live oak usually costs $175 to $900 depending on size and how much deadwood is in it. Cabling a split trunk to buy a tree more years generally runs $350 to $1,200.
Tree Trimming, Cabling and Lakefront Work in Inwood
For the big live oaks around Lake Cannon, our tree trimming and pruning clears roofs and opens views without stripping the canopy. When a valuable tree has a weak fork, tree cabling and bracing can add support. Our lakefront tree service covers seawall and dock access on lake lots, and if a storm drops a limb on your roof, emergency tree removal is available any hour. Questions
Inwood Tree Service FAQ
Inwood is an unincorporated area, so most properties follow Polk County's rules, even though they use Winter Haven mailing addresses and the 33880 or 33881 ZIP codes. A few nearby parcels are inside the city. Because the city and county handle tree removal differently, we check each property's jurisdiction before quoting.
That we can. We use selective pruning: removing deadwood, raising low limbs and thinning a few branches so you can see the lake through the canopy. We do not top live oaks, because that causes weak regrowth and decay. Most single large live oaks prune for $175 to $900 depending on size, and lakefront access can add to that.
Not always, but a hollow laurel oak deserves a close look. We check how much sound wood remains, where the decay is and what the tree could hit if it fails. Some can be reduced and kept a few more years. Others are too far gone. Our free walk-through gives you an honest answer, and we can arrange a written ISA Certified Arborist assessment if you need one.
Possibly. Yard trees on a single-family lot in unincorporated Polk usually do not need a county permit, but shoreline vegetation and anything below the waterline can fall under state and water management district rules. We confirm what applies to your parcel before we start, and we keep cuts on the land side unless approval is in place.
Camphor is an invasive tree in Florida. It grows fast, crowds out lawns and other plants, and spreads seed through birds. In Inwood, many were never planted on purpose and now stand 40 feet tall next to houses. Removal usually makes more sense than repeated trimming, and grinding the stump afterward stops most of the resprouting.
Many lots on the NW avenues have narrow side yards, fences and lines overhead. We climb the tree and lower pieces on ropes so nothing drops onto roofs or fences. Brush goes out by hand to the chipper on the street. It takes longer than an open-yard fell, which is why rigging-heavy removals in Inwood usually sit in the mid to upper part of our price range.
Often, yes, if the crack is caught early and the wood around it is sound. Cabling and bracing ties weak forks together with steel hardware to reduce the chance of a split. It generally runs $350 to $1,200 per tree. We will tell you if the tree is a good candidate or if cabling would just be delaying a removal.
Regularly. Plazas and businesses along Havendale Boulevard often need overgrown buffers trimmed, dead trees removed or sight lines cleared at driveways. Commercial parcels can carry county landscape requirements that home lots do not, so we check those first. We can work early or on Saturdays to stay out of customers' way.
