Jan Phyl Village Tree Service and Removal
Jan Phyl Village started as a 1950 subdivision west of Winter Haven, and many of its streets are named for citrus. Seventy years later, its pines, oaks and leftover grove trees need regular attention, and we give a written price for every job.
Jan Phyl Village Tree Service West of Winter Haven
Jan Phyl Village is a census-designated place in unincorporated Polk County, west of Winter Haven between Recker Highway (SR 655) and the country around Lake Hancock. Most of the village lies west and slightly south of downtown Winter Haven. It covers a little under five square miles, almost all of it land, and about 5,927 people lived here at the 2020 census. Spirit Lake Road, Coleman Road and Thornhill Road are the routes most residents use, and Winter Lake Road (SR 540) runs along the south side.
The village began in 1950, when Harry Lesnick of Vermont bought about 1,200 acres west of Winter Haven and named the development after his daughters. Early buyers included airmen and flight instructors from the nearby Bartow Air Base during the Korean War, and when military activity wound down in 1953, many homes went into foreclosure. You can still trace that history in street names like Lesnick Drive and Jan Mar Drive, and in the grove past that shows up in Hamlin Street, Valencia Street, Murcott Street, Temple Circle, Tangelo Street and Grapefruit Drive.
Tree Removal in Jan Phyl Village: Pines, Oaks and Grove Remnants
Seventy-plus years of growth means many yards here now carry trees much bigger than anyone planned for. Slash pines are a big part of the mix, especially near the lakes and on lots that were never fully cleared. Pines here face lightning strikes, bark beetles after drought and wind snap during hurricanes, and a dead pine gets brittle within months. Laurel and water oaks from the 1950s and 1960s are reaching the age where decay sets in, and live oaks on corner lots have grown wide over roofs and driveways.
Soils are deep, sandy and well drained on most blocks, which keeps roots spread wide and fairly shallow. Around Lake Thomas, Lake Arrowhead and Sears Lake, the ground holds more water and you get cypress, red maple and wax myrtle along the banks. Old citrus still stands in some backyards, usually declining from greening. Chinese tallow and camphor have filled in the empty lots and back fence lines, and they are worth clearing before they seed into the neighbor's yard.

Typical Jan Phyl Village Tree Jobs
Dead and dying pines are probably the most common call we get here, followed by oaks over roofs and old citrus that homeowners finally want gone. We also clear overgrown lots that have sat empty for years, which in this area often means removing a thick stand of tallow, camphor and vines before a buyer or builder can see the ground. After a hurricane, pine trunks snapped halfway up and oaks pulled out of sandy soil are the usual damage. We also do quite a bit of stump grinding here, since many old stumps were left behind after earlier storm cleanups.
Jan Phyl Village Tree Rules Under Polk County
The village is not part of any city, so the Polk County Land Development Code applies rather than Winter Haven's city ordinance. On a lot with an existing single-family home, taking out a yard tree usually does not need a county tree permit. Clearing vacant lots for building, commercial work and anything touching the wetlands around Lake Thomas, Lake Arrowhead or Sears Lake can bring in county, water management district or state review. We confirm the requirements for your parcel with the county on every estimate. If a tree is a clear hazard, Florida Statute 163.045 lets a single-family homeowner remove it without a local permit, fee or replanting when they hold signed documentation from an ISA Certified Arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect. We can arrange that assessment.
Utility Lines and Trees in Jan Phyl Village
Overhead lines run along most village streets and rear easements. Tampa Electric serves much of the Winter Haven area, with Duke Energy Florida serving other parts of Polk, so we confirm the utility for your address. The utility clears anything touching primary wires. We take it from there, and we work around the service line to your house with ropes and controlled cuts.

Jan Phyl Village Tree Service Cost
A dead pine or small tree with open space around it often costs between $325 and $850 to remove here. Bigger pines near houses and mature oaks over roofs usually land between $850 and $1,800, and only the largest, most tangled jobs push past that. Stump grinding runs $95 to $425 per stump, and we discount when several are done in one visit. Clearing an overgrown vacant lot typically starts around $1,800 per acre for light brush and climbs to $6,500 or more for heavy growth with large stumps. If a storm puts a pine on your roof at night, emergency rates add 25 to 50 percent, and we tell you before we start.

Questions
Jan Phyl Village Tree Service FAQ
Jan Phyl Village is just west of Winter Haven, off Recker Highway, Spirit Lake Road and Coleman Road, with Lake Thomas and Lake Arrowhead inside the village. It is an unincorporated census-designated place with a Winter Haven mailing address and the 33880 ZIP code. That means Polk County, not the city, sets the rules for most tree work here.
Slash pines here deal with lightning, drought stress and bark beetles, and the sandy soil dries out fast in a dry spring. Once a pine browns from the top, it rarely recovers, and the wood gets brittle quickly. A dead pine near a house should come down sooner rather than later. We can tell you whether a browning pine is truly dead or just stressed.
Absolutely. Many empty lots here have grown into thick stands of tallow, camphor, vines and young pines. We cut, chip and haul it, and we can grind stumps so the lot is ready to mow or build on. Light clearing generally starts around $1,800 per acre. Lots near the lakes or wetlands may need county review, which we check before we start.
Not necessarily. If a citrus tree still produces and looks healthy, light pruning can keep it going. Many older backyard trees in the village have citrus greening, though, which causes yellow leaves, small sour fruit and slow decline with no cure. Removing those trees and grinding the stumps is usually cheap compared with oak removals, often starting around $325 per tree.
A yard tree on a single-family lot in unincorporated Polk County usually does not need a county permit. Trees right on the bank, in wetlands or in the water are a different case, and state or water management district rules can apply. We confirm what applies to your lot before work starts, and we keep cuts on the upland side unless approval is in place.
Most stumps run $95 to $425 depending on diameter and access. Old pine stumps are usually on the easier end, while big oak stumps with wide root flares cost more. If you have several stumps from past storms, grinding them all in one visit brings the price per stump down. We rake the chips into the hole or haul them off, whichever you prefer.
They can. Many older homes in the area still use septic tanks, and oak, camphor and tallow roots go after the moisture around drain fields and pipes. If you are seeing slow drains or soggy spots, a tree near the system may be part of the problem. We can remove the tree and grind the stump, and we recommend a septic contractor check the lines.
Yes, around the clock for trees on houses, vehicles or blocking a driveway. We photograph the damage for your insurance before cutting, tarp what we can and remove the tree in sections. Emergency and after-hours work costs 25 to 50 percent more than standard rates, and we give you that number before we start so there are no surprises.
