Florence Villa Tree Service on Winter Haven's North Side

Florence Villa grew up in the 1880s north of the original Winter Haven village, on land Dr. Frederick Inman bought after he and his wife Florence moved down from Akron, Ohio. He named it for her, planted citrus and other crops, founded the Florence Villa Packing House, and turned their first home into the Florence Villa Hotel, a resort with a golf course and boat rides on the nearby lakes. The railroad built a Florence Villa station to serve it. Black families, many of whom worked the groves and the hotel, built their own neighborhood north of Lake Silver, with churches, schools, a lodge and a movie theater, and it became the largest of Winter Haven's Black communities.

The community incorporated in 1917 and joined Winter Haven in 1923. Today the city's Florence Villa redevelopment area runs roughly from 6th Street NW on the west to 11th Street on the east, and from Avenue X NW and Ware Avenue NE on the north down to the Avenue M NW, Avenue I and Lake Martha Drive area on the south. First Street N, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and US-17 carry most of the traffic.

Tree Removal in Florence Villa: Old Oaks and Grove Remnants

Many of the yards here have trees that predate the houses. Live oaks and laurel oaks are the main canopy, with water oaks in the low ground near Lake Maude and Lake Idyl, sabal palms along fences and some tall slash pines left over from the original woods. Old sour orange and grapefruit trees still survive in backyards from the grove era, along with camphor trees that spread on their own and are now listed as invasive in Florida.

Most homes are modest block or frame houses on smaller lots, which means many big oaks sit right over roofs, carports and fences. A lot of those oaks were topped or badly pruned years ago, and the regrowth from those cuts is weakly attached and prone to breaking in storms. The soil is the same well-drained sand found across the north side, and shallow roots often lift driveways and sidewalks. We look at each tree honestly and will say when pruning will do the job instead of removal.

Florence Villa streets and landmarks we work around

  • First Street N — the commercial spine, where trees near storefronts and lots need clearance work timed around traffic.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard — residential and commercial lots with mature oaks and palms close to the street.
  • Avenue O — home to the historical marker for the 1924 Florence Villa Training School, with older oaks shading the nearby blocks.
  • Lake Maude — homes near the nature park and recreation complex, where wet ground and heavy vegetation along the shore affect access.
  • Lake Idyl — a smaller lake with overgrown edges where invasive trees and vines crowd nearby yards.
  • Inman Park and the northern gateway — residential streets near the park the Inman family gave the city, with big oaks and older palms.
  • Lucerne Park Road (SR-544) toward the north edge — larger lots where pines and oaks need clearing back from homes and fences.

Tree Trimming in Florence Villa: What Homeowners Ask For

The calls we get most often here are for oaks hanging over roofs, limbs touching the service drop to the house, dead trees that need to come down before the next storm, and old stumps left by earlier removals. Many owners also want the backyard opened up so grass will grow again or a shed can go in. Hurricanes Ian in 2022 and Milton in 2024 both brought down limbs across the north side, and many trees that were damaged then still carry cracked or hanging branches that should be cleaned out.

We also do a lot of work for property owners and landlords who need a lot cleared up after a tree was neglected for years. A single visit can handle pruning, a removal and stump grinding together, which keeps the cost down compared to scheduling each separately.

Florence Villa Tree Rules Under the City of Winter Haven

Florence Villa has been part of the City of Winter Haven for a century, so city code governs tree work here. The tree protection sections of Chapter 21 in the Unified Land Development Code cover protected and specimen trees, permits and mitigation. As we read them, single-family detached homes and duplexes are generally exempt from the permit requirement, while commercial properties, multifamily sites and new development along First Street and US-17 may need a permit and replacement plan. We confirm with the city on every estimate.

Trees in the public right-of-way belong to the city. For a single-family home, Florida Statute 163.045 lets you remove a tree that an ISA Certified Arborist or Florida-licensed landscape architect has documented as an unacceptable risk without a local permit or replanting rule, and we can arrange that written assessment. Electric lines in this part of town are generally Tampa Electric, with Duke Energy Florida nearby, so we help you confirm which utility owns the line before any work near it.

Florence Villa Tree Removal Cost

Prices in Florence Villa are usually moderate because lots are small and trucks can often park right at the curb. A dead laurel oak under 30 feet often lands between $325 and $850. A 40 to 50 foot oak over a roof is more likely in the $850 to $1,800 range because it has to be roped down in pieces. Single-palm trims run $85 to $285, and stump grinding costs $95 to $425 per stump. Cabling a split oak worth saving runs $350 to $1,200. We give a flat written price, and cleanup is included on every removal.

Winter Haven Tree Services We Offer in Florence Villa

Owners here most often call for tree trimming and pruning to clear roofs and lines, followed by tree removal for dead or failing oaks and stump grinding to finish the yard. When a storm drops a tree on a house, our emergency tree removal crew is on call around the clock, and storm damage cleanup handles the limbs and debris that follow. If you have old grove trees in the yard, our post on what to do with old citrus trees in Winter Haven walks through when to keep them and when to take them out.

Questions

Florence Villa Tree Service FAQ

Florence Villa is on the north side of Winter Haven, north of Lake Silver and downtown. The city's redevelopment area runs roughly from 6th Street NW to 11th Street and from Avenue X NW and Ware Avenue NE down to the Avenue M NW and Lake Martha Drive area. First Street N, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and US-17 run through it.

Not anymore. Florence Villa incorporated in 1917 and merged into the City of Winter Haven in 1923. Today it is a Winter Haven neighborhood with its own history and community organizations, and city rules apply to tree work here. Its name comes from Florence Inman, whose husband Dr. Frederick Inman developed the area in the 1880s.

For most single-family and duplex homes, Chapter 21 of the Winter Haven code generally exempts tree removal from the permit requirement, as we read it. Commercial lots, multifamily buildings and new development are treated differently. Trees in the right-of-way belong to the city. We confirm the current rules for your property before scheduling any removal.

Topped oaks grow back with clusters of fast, weakly attached sprouts that break easily in storms. A good structural prune can thin those sprouts and leave the strongest ones to form a better crown. If the trunk has decayed at the old cuts, removal may be safer. We check the cuts and trunk on the walk-through and give you both options when both are realistic.

Yes. Old citrus trees from the grove days often have decay, thorny regrowth and disease. A small citrus tree removal usually falls in the $325 to $850 range, including stump grinding when you want it. If the tree still produces and is healthy, we can prune it instead and explain what that will and will not fix.

Most stumps cost between $95 and $425 to grind, depending on diameter, root flare and how close the stump sits to a fence, slab or driveway. Old laurel oak stumps are often large and need more time. If you have several stumps, grinding them in one visit lowers the cost per stump.

Yes. We can prune, remove dead trees, grind stumps and haul off old debris in one visit, priced as a single flat job. That is often cheaper than handling each piece separately. We confirm with the owner before cutting anything on a rental and photograph the property before and after if you need records.

Call the emergency line any time. We photograph the damage for insurance first, then remove the weight from the roof in sections so it does not shift further. Emergency and after-hours work carries a 25 to 50 percent premium, and we give you the price in writing before we start climbing.
